Early Detection Works

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment was at risk of losing funding to pay for cancer screenings due to a lack of program usage. The name of the existing program (Free to Know) was unclear (free to know what?), and there was a lack of awareness surrounding the program.

vitalink took a research-based approach, developing a program name that was both easier to understand and gave hope: Early Detection Works. Next, we developed and implemented a multi-media campaign aimed at reaching our target audiences, including underserved groups (materials were produced in multiple languages) and rural women who prioritized their families and farms above their own health.

Turnover at doctor’s offices meant new staff members often were unaware of the free cancer screening program, leading to confusion when patients inquired. Our team developed and delivered materials for waiting rooms at doctors’ offices, along with static clings to communicate that patients were in the right place and to encourage them to ask about the program.

The results:

•        23% jump in participation for free cancer screenings

•        Huge increase in awareness of programs

•        Over 6 million impressions

Our partnership with the state was extended over several years, with the program reaching maximum capacity multiple years running.
