As in many more rural areas of the country, young people in Eastern North Carolina often head off to college then pursue careers in cities like Charlotte, Raleigh, or others across the United States. What if we could change that dynamic?

A group of 16 public health agencies representing 25 counties in Eastern North Carolina combined forces and used funding received under the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) to engage vitalink to develop a campaign to educate high school students, college students, and the community about the wide range of careers in public health and related opportunities close to home.

The team conducted primary research and created a group of Youth Ambassadors to confirm the campaign’s messaging and creative would resonate with youth. We discovered just how important it was for young people to feel they were making a difference.

The final result was a branded campaign called Careers2MakeADifference complete with a strategic marketing plan, logo, messaging, event materials, videos, digital assets, landing page design, and program and social media toolkits for each of the agencies to customize and utilize to promote their own health departments. This campaign focused on long-term outcomes, with the goal of increasing economic mobility for residents of Eastern NC.
